Dark Funeral - Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus
Although it seems that most of the big names in black metal usually hail from Norway, there are some exceptions. For example this band right here, Dark Funeral, hail from Sweden, also a country with an abundance of metal bands. I had an encounter with them earlier this year at the Party.San festival in Germany, and since I’m descending further and further into the world of black metal I thought it would be nice to review their new album Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus.
This record marks Dark Funeral’s fifth full length studio album and according to the bio it is their most technical and varied album to date. The record is produced by Hypocrisy’s Peter Tägtren, which is usually a guarantee for a decent and solid sound, and Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus is no exception to this rule. The production is crystal-clear, powerful, epic and true to the genre, it truly honours the nine songs Dark Funeral have written here. As for the songs themselves, as usual they pass by at a very fast tempo. Especially the efforts of drummer Dominator don’t pass by unnoticed, this dude is extremely fast and technical, something I already noticed at Party.San earlier this year. A real treat for every fan of extreme metal drumming.
As I am still just making my first steps in the black metal scene, I have a hard time making references for this band. But the more I listen to Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus, the more I start to like the record and black metal in general. The songs are quite dynamic, well thought-through, excellently produced and have a terrific atmosphere. If you are into the more commercial and approachable but high-speed black metal, don’t hesitate to check this one out once it hits the stores worldwide! Fans of the band know what to expect and can pick it up blindly.
